Protect Your Eyes with Sunglasses

Polarised Sunglasses and Prescription Sunglasses

At Vedelago Optometrists, we believe that sunglasses are more than just a fashion item – they can protect your eyes from the strong and dangerous UV rays, which we are exposed to every day.

We are exposed to UV radiation from early childhood, and the effects of excessive radiation are often cumulative and damaging to the eye, without us even realising it. This kind of damage is preventable simply by wearing a pair of sunglasses or prescription sunglasses to protect your eyes.  While we accumulate the majority of UV in our first eighteen years, the effects only show themselves later in life. Damage, both in the longer and shorter term, can arise in the form of an inflamed cornea, cataracts, pterygium or macular degeneration in your eyes.

Sunglasses and prescription sunglasses come in many different forms:

  • Transition lenses (also known as photochromic lenses) – available in different colours, styles and materials, these lenses become tinted when exposed to sunlight (UV radiation) and become clear indoors. Transition lenses now come in various tint intensities to suit different vision needs and situations.

  • Polarised lenses – are designed to reduce glare from horizontal surfaces such as water, pavement, roads, sand, and snow and car exteriors.  Polarised lenses feature a polarised film built into the lens, which acts like a venetian blind where by light travelling in certain directions is blocked out, reducing glare.

  • Photochromic polarised lenses – combining the benefits of both photochromic and polarised lens technologies.

  • Tinted lenses – the simplest form of sunglasses, you choose the tint colour and intensity you prefer.

  • Contact lenses – protect your eyes from UV without the inconvenience of glasses; now available in a variety of contact lenses.  It is vital to still wear sunglasses over your contact lenses for maximum UV protection.
